As the UK economy returned to growth for the first time in three months, the growth was less than expected at just 0.1%. Interestingly, according to the ONS, this was driven by trade for pubs, restaurants and the construction industry.
For a sector that has experienced a particularly difficult time, this might be seen as marginally good news for elements of the Food & Drink industry. However, it is a small improvement and may not be felt sufficiently by many.
Economists and those in financial analysis still feel that the economy is "stuck" and we are having a "gloomy start". However, Food Manufacturer reported this week that despite the uncertainty of changes in government policies and pressures in rising costs, a 2025 survey by Made UK found that the manufacturing sector is feeling reasonably optimistic, with the focus on opportunities for growth being in digital transformation and NPD.
Therefore, let's remain hopeful, positive and optimistic that the opportunities for growth this year will outweigh the risks for our manufacturing sector.
What level of optimism do you hold for 2025 in our industry?
